The issue opens with “The Reality and Truth of Fiction”, an essay by Miroslav Petříček from his series on “truth”, accompanied by an excerpt from Reinhart Koselleck’s essay “Fiction and Historical Reality”. It is followed by Karel Haloun’s fifth instalment of his series “Truth and Lies on the Road”, entitled “Burgundy Notebook”, and also the fifth sequel of Petr Fischer’s “documentary pages”, entitled “Traps in Time” and dedicated to the works of Helena Třeštíková. The section “Truth… Forever” then concludes with “Beckett Forever” by Marty Balin. The section “In Instalments… the Golden Age” consists of the next instalment of Marie Zdeňková’s study dedicated to the contemporary Czech directorial-scenographic tandems – Michal Hába and Adriana Černá, Vojtěch Bárta and Jana Hauskrechtová, Daniel Špinar and Lucia Škandíková, Michal Pěchouček and Jan Horák. In the section “Psychedelic Art… with Puppets” Eliška Reiterová writes (“A Craving for Peculiar Puppets”) about puppet theatre productions at the Alfred ve dvoře Theatre and the Tremendous Trifles Festival: Sapphire Head by Handa Gote research & development, A Vampire on Koštofránek and Baba Yaga by Robert Smolík and Škrobotník, Šlundra and Šíbrová ensemble, Hunting Saga by students from KALD DAMU, and Luna by Albert Hrubý and Televize Estráda. Karel Král follows on thematically (“Learn, Son, How to Become a Wise Wizard”) and reviews the production of The Cabinet of Miracles or Orbis Pictus by Naive Theatre Liberec (directed by Michaela Homolová) on the basis of John Amos Comenius’s book, and at the same time he looks back at Robert Smolík’s productions and the poetics of Jan Švankmajer and Josef Váchal. In his essay “For the Whole Family, Ramblers Not Excluded” Vladimír Mikulka reflects on productions of Vít Peřina’s play One Hour More or Gathering in the Woods, directed by Tomáš Dvořák at the Naive Theatre Liberec, and Šimon Olivětín’s (alias René Levínský’s) Detective Hoopoe at the Alfa Theatre Pilsen (directed by Tomáš Procházka). In the section “The Czech Land… Our Home” Jakub Škorpil writes about productions All the Communists Fucked Up in Us and Three Heterans by Adam Skala and MASO Theatre (“To Inflate a Sub-machine and Go Postal”) and about the production of Vincent Macaigne’s play I am a Country at the National Theatre Prague (directed by Jan Mikulášek) and Petr Boháč’s and the Spitfire Company’s project Presidements (“Comics and Cartoon”). Miloslav Vojtíšek, alias S.d.Ch., describes a performance by the traditional (“old”) Circus Kellner in the Moravian country (“Circus Kellner on the Spot /Behind the Local Authority Building/”) and Rudo Leška (“On the Festival which /Almost/ Did Not Happen”) writes about the Janáček Brno Festival 2020 and Janáček’s Destiny directed by Robert Carsen. The section “Swan Songs… and Endangered Species” includes Jana Wild’s essay on Sláva Daubnerová’s production Masterpiece, announced as her last performance, and the survey eloquently entitled “The Playwright – Species Designated for Disposal?” where Czech playwrights Milan Uhde, S.d.Ch., Karel Steigerwald, Jiří Pokorný, Vít Peřina, Tomáš Dianiška, René Levínský and Petr Zelenka respond to questions asked by Karel Král. The play of the issue is a monumental historical epic Leopoldstat by Tom Stoppard in translation by Jitka Sloupová. The series of flash dramas “Truth, Love and Others”, commissioned by Svět a divadlo (World and Theatre magazine), closes with the playlet The Last Records (or A Spiritualistic Ending of the Do-Gooders Series) by S.d.Ch. The comic strip The Twin “about the final struggle between theatre and television in both our and parallel worlds” by the duo Klimáček-Danglár, continues with the instalment Godot Arrived.
